Description
Prednisone Tablets – Veterinary Use
- Active Ingredient: Prednisone
- Formulation: Oral tablets ( 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg)
- Species: Dogs (cats may require prednisolone due to limited hepatic conversion)
- Indications:
- Anti-inflammatory: arthritis, dermatitis, colitis
- Immunosuppressive: autoimmune hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia
- Allergic conditions: asthma, atopic dermatitis
- Adrenal insufficiency: replacement therapy for Addison’s disease
- Mechanism of Action:
- Prednisone is converted in the liver to prednisolone
- Suppresses inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and cytokine release
- Reduces immune activity by down regulating lymphocyte function
- Administration:
- Oral administration with food to reduce GI upset
- Dosage varies by indication, species, and patient response
- Tapering recommended after prolonged use to prevent adrenal suppression
